Finals day took 7Wells to Bromley RFC for the Kent Waterfall Vase Final, on Bromley’s excellent first-team pitch. Once underway, the day delivered exactly what you want from an end-of-season 15-a-side fixture.

Conditions were wet and windy early on, making the ball slippery, but 7Wells handled them intelligently and had established a commanding lead by the time the weather eased. Winning the toss also mattered: 7Wells played the first half with the wind and a slight slope, and made that advantage count through excellent restart retention and smart game management.

The start was controlled and clinical. After multiple phases from the kick-off, Mary opened the scoring on three minutes, converted by Sydney. From the restart, 7Wells retained again and Mary crossed for her second, converted by Sienna. Sustained pressure followed, and after Mae was held up, Bromley’s pass back in-goal under pressure allowed captain Nella to pounce for the third try, converted by Tilly. Orla scored next with Sienna converting from wide, Zara added another, and Mary completed her first-half hat-trick, created by a well-used blindside overlap and quick hands. Half-time: 38–0, a standout 25 minutes of rugby built on direct running, quick recycling and committed defence.

Bromley, well drilled throughout, came out strongly after the break and punished a missed tackle to score and convert. That was a useful reminder that Finals Day rugby never gives you anything for free. 7Wells responded immediately, keeping intensity high even while rotating six players on and off each quarter to ensure all 21 girls played at least half the match. Lottie L (after an earlier held-up decision), Rosie and Tilly added second-half tries to close out a 53–7 win.

The scrum was stable and provided a consistent platform. At the breakdown, 7Wells were notably sharper than in recent weeks: first support arrived quickly, Sophie’s ruck work was outstanding, and quick ball was turned into forward momentum with better decision-making. Defensively, line speed and spacing created pressure and errors, with Eva setting the tone with a decisive early tackle and Zara relentless whenever Bromley had possession. The girls loved having a female ref from the London Society who was excellent throughout.

All 21 girls received medals, reflecting a genuine squad effort across the season. Some players had to head off before the presentations, but a group of 7Wells girls were handed the Vase by Aoife Wafe (Harlequins and Ireland Women’s No.8), which made for a memorable Finals Day moment.

Thanks to Ross, the Women & Girls lead at Bromley, and to the club for hosting and for a competitive, well-matched game played in exactly the right spirit. Thanks also to Kent’s Tom Jury for organising the Girls Waterfall competition this season.

The competitive 15-a-side campaign ends on a high. Attention now turns to upcoming friendlies and the shorter formats of 10s and 7s as this squad continues its development.
