BCW Sabres, a combined side drawn from Old Beccehamian, Old Colfeian and Westcombe Park, proved too strong in very wet and windy conditions, running out 48–7 winners against a depleted but determined 7Wells squad.
Playing uphill in the first half, 7Wells struggled to halt Sabres’ powerful, direct carrying. The hosts scored six tries and two conversions to take a 34–0 lead at the break. Despite losing players to injury and illness before kick-off and fielding just the requisite 15 , 7Wells regrouped impressively.
The second half was a different contest. Holly crossed for a well-constructed 7Wells try, converted by Sydney, reflecting a sharper defensive shape and greater determination across the park. Sabres added two further converted scores, but 7Wells’ resilience stood out: they kept competing at the breakdown, improved their line speed and refused to let the scoreline define the effort.
Rosie led with composure as captain, finishing the match with a notably gracious post-game address to the hosts, congratulating them on “a well-deserved win” and describing them as a “great team”. Tilly delivered a strong performance, recovering well after a couple of heavy tackles. Hayden worked tirelessly in the front row before departing late on after a knock. Two players — Maisie and Eliza — made impressive debuts in difficult conditions.
With around 100 supporters braving the weather and sausages in buns served afterwards, the fixture retained a warm community feel. BCW Sabres named Zara as 7Wells’ player of the match; 7Wells reciprocated by awarding the honour to the Sabres’ captain.
Next week’s scheduled match against BASS (Beckenham and Sidcup) has been postponed until 2026.
