7Wells travelled to Old Alleynians in Dulwich on Sunday 23 November and came away 53–15 winners. The score belies what was a well-balanced four-quarter match played in bright sunshine following a day and night of heavy rain.
To keep numbers even, the game shifted between 13-a-side and 12-a-side, with six 7Wells players — Rosie, Hayden, Mary, Millie, Holly and Eva — showing great rugby values; turning out for the hosts for a quarter each. Every girl present (when able!) got to play the full game.
7Wells probably had the best of the first three quarters. The girls ran in nine tries in total: four from Lottie S, two each from Rosie and Mary, and one from Zara, with Sydney adding four conversions. Old Alleynians produced impressive phase play in the first half, once driving to the 7Wells line before a knock-on allowed a length-of-the-field counter. However, the home side finished the match stronger, scoring twice in the final quarter and sustaining pressure.
Contested scrums — first six-a-side, later five — were handled well, and the girls' first-up tackling, a clear coaching focus, improved throughout. Although Sophie left the match injured, Phoebe and Hayden both took knocks but returned to finish.
A large, supportive touchline from both clubs added to the atmosphere. Old Alleynians’ hospitality — including post-match chicken curry and Eva’s homemade cookies — was warmly received. The teams selected Bella (Old Alleynians) and Lottie S (7Wells) as their players of the match.
