Wells Dominate at St Mark’s with Six-try First-Half Blitz

TWRFC 1XV 68- 19 Camberley

Tunbridge Wells put in a clinical and powerful performance at St Mark’s, beating Camberley 68–19 in a match where their physical edge and attacking shape proved too much to handle. Despite changes in the backline, the home side played with control and purpose, combining a dominant pack with a willingness to shift the ball.

Playing down the slope with the wind behind them, Wells started on the front foot. Early pressure forced mistakes and they struck quickly. Good structure created space for Harry Isaac out wide, and he finished well in the corner. Dan Tomanek added the conversion for a 7–0 lead.

The forward pack soon took control of the game. Strong work at the set piece and breakdown pinned Camberley back, and from a five metre line-out drive Josh Groocock forced his way over to make it 12–0.

Wells kept the tempo high. Direct running and quick hands through midfield opened the door for Hunter Dickson, who stepped through to score under the posts. With the conversion added, the lead stretched to 19–0.

Confidence was growing and Wells began to play from deeper areas. A turnover inside their own 22 sparked a well-worked move across the pitch, finished by Isaac for his second in the corner. The conversion made it 26–0.

Sustained pressure followed. The pack carried hard and recycled well before Jake Rutherford sniped over from close range. Soon after, a dominant scrum near the Camberley line allowed Dave Thornton to pick up and drive over, pushing the score to 40–0.

Wells finished the half strongly. A smart blindside play and good handling in midfield created space for Oli Billin to go over, giving the home side a 47–7 lead at the break after a late Camberley reply.

The second half continued in the same vein. Wells controlled territory and possession, and from another clean line-out the forwards drove over to bring up 54–7.

From a line-out further out, the ball was moved with accuracy to the right and Thornton powered over again for his second, extending the lead to 61–7.

Camberley kept working and added to their score, but Wells remained in control. Continued pressure and multiple phases led to another try, with Nick Doherty thought to have finished the move.

A late Camberley score came while Wells were down to fourteen men following a yellow card for Carwyn Williams, but the result was already beyond doubt.

At full time, Tunbridge Wells ran out 68–19 winners. It was a performance built on set piece strength, physical carrying and the ability to move the ball into space.

It was also a good day across the club, with the 2nd XV securing a hard fought 17–16 win away at Brockleians.
