Tunbridge Wells RFC Crowned Papa Johns Shield Champions After Epic 47–36 Final Showdown

In a breathtaking finale to the Papa Johns Shield competition, Tunbridge Wells RFC were crowned champions after a thrilling 47–36 victory over Leek RFC at Sixways Stadium in Worcester on Saturday, May 18. The match delivered everything a final should—intensity, drama, and a spectacular comeback that sent the travelling supporters into raptures.

From the first whistle, Tunbridge Wells showed their intent. A midfield turnover sparked the opening score, with quick hands and sharp support play sending Goodger over the line. The conversion was slotted from wide out, and the Kent side had drawn first blood. Momentum was firmly with Wells as they relentlessly built pressure, combining strong forward carries with precise backline movement. By the 26th minute, they had surged to a dominant 26–0 lead.

But finals never come easy. Just before the break, Leek found their rhythm, working through multiple phases before dotting down in the corner. A superb touchline conversion meant they trailed 26–7 at half-time—still very much in the contest.

The second half brought an immediate response from Leek. With renewed belief, they struck twice in quick succession, bringing the scoreline to a tense 26–21. Tunbridge Wells responded through a dazzling break and offload, sending Sousa in for a crucial score, nudging the lead back to 33–29.

Yet the Midlands side weren’t finished. A turnover at the breakdown allowed them to launch a rapid attack and cross under the posts, seizing the lead for the first time in the match at 36–33. With just ten minutes left, the momentum had swung dramatically.

But champions rise when it matters most.

A penalty at halfway gave Tunbridge Wells the field position they needed. Calm and clinical, they worked through four composed phases before Wigman surged over to restore the lead. Another inch-perfect conversion made it 40–36.

And then came the final hammer blow.

Hobbs broke free with a rampaging 35-metre run, sucking in defenders before releasing Thornton, who powered through desperate tackles and galloped home from 25 metres out. The conversion sailed through the posts, taking the score to 47–36—and sealing a glorious victory.

At full-time, players and fans alike erupted. After a match filled with heart, grit, and moments of magic, Tunbridge Wells RFC stood tall as the 2024 Papa Johns Shield winners.

A performance to remember. A title well earned. A moment that will live long in club history.

Congratulations, Tunbridge Wells RFC – 2024 Shield Champions!
