TWRFC Academy update

TWRFC Academy update

Perihan Ibrahim1 Sep - 20:09

We’re back in the Colts National cup two seasons after re-launch !!

It’s now two seasons since we re-launched the TWRFC Academy with one clear ambition: to retain more of our youth players into the adult game.
Our aim has always been to provide a well-structured, individually challenging pathway into senior rugby – giving our young players the best possible chance to succeed here at TWRFC.
In the past, too many of our youth players felt they had to leave because we didn’t offer a viable next step. Some didn’t have a positive experience when they did. We wanted to change that – and we’ve built on the best practice of leading academies across the country: dedicated professional coaches, a clear route into senior rugby, and off-pitch support during these crucial teenage years.
We haven’t got everything right, and there’s still work to do, but the progress has been huge.
Here’s where we are today:
Professional set-up – Four professional coaches lead our men’s and women’s academies, supported by seven qualified coaches and a brilliant team of volunteers.
Growing numbers – Over 100 players across the Academies, with multiple teams and real competition for places. Last season we ran two competitive Colts sides which is proof that our retention strategy is working.
Competing at the top – Our Boys Colts team are competing in Kent’s top leagues and have been invited into the National Cup Competition – the first time in nearly a decade.
Pathway in action – Last season, 5 boys and 3 girls stepped up into our elite senior squads. This year, we expect 20+ to make the transition at 18. The senior connection has never been stronger.
Leadership appointments – Freddie Pierrepont has joined as Director of Rugby, bringing top-level experience to align philosophies between Academy and Seniors. Laura McGee is our new Women’s Rugby Development Officer, driving the women’s pathway from U16s through to senior rugby, launching for 2025/26.
Player development foundations – Every game is now filmed, analysed, and used to shape training. Players also have access to physio and medical support to keep them performing at their best.

The results are clear: we’re more professional, more competitive, and more connected to our senior squads than ever before. But we’re not stopping here – with the continued support of our members and sponsors, we’ll go further and faster.
Finally, a huge thank you to Simon Whatling, Ben Whale, Dan Tomanek, Laura McGee, Martin Croker, Mark Brown, John Gildersleeve, Tammy Samuel, and Paul Miles for your dedication and energy. What you’re building is working – and it’s shaping the future of rugby in Tunbridge Wells.
