TWRFC 7 REACH SEMI-FINALS OF THE E KENT SEVENS

This Sunday the club managed to get 8 hardy souls out to represent us in the E Kent Sevens run by Dover RFC at their Crabble Ground.

Wells were represented by: Steve Jones, Ollie Rogers, Mike Doherty, Ian McCaul, Nick Doherty, Sitiveni Turagaiviu, Mark Higgins and Chris Garland.

As the allowable squad was 10 they were already handicapped as there was less chance to rest people between rounds. However, any thought of opting for the plate rather than the main competition was wiped away when they comprehensively outplayed Snowdon to win 47-5 in the first round. The only surprise apparently being when Ian McCaul was beaten on the outside by a 50 year old pirate with a wooden leg and a parrot on one shoulder!

And so to the next round where they put up a physical display vs Ashford to come out overall winners by 34 -12.  Ollie Rogers showing great passing and running skills, despite dummying drop goals from halfway, Siti showing his strength in the tackle and his playmaking, Ian McCaul taking great ball from the kick off, Mark Higgins displaying juggling skills for his try, with Steve Jones and Mike Doherty providing the finish and Nick Doherty and Chris Garland settling into Sevens discipline.

And……….so to the Semi Finals where we drew Warlingham who had looked sharp. The start was not kind to us as Warlingham profited first from a forward pass try described by the touch judge , who looked like he needed a magnifying glass to read the Times, as ‘flat’. Then from the restart a not 10 was let go by the ref who Dave Bartley said was about U 13 Schools standard, and we were two tries down. Wells stormed back and Siti and Mike pulled the score back but the lack of a full squad told against a fast and well organized Warlingham outfit who eventually went through by 5tries to 2.

A great effort from all involved and had one or two Wells players made themselves available, the story of the season, we could well have won both tournaments we entered. Still  Siti got his first visit to the seaside for a paddle an ice cream and some fish and chips

See you all at Players meetings, AGM’s and pre-season. In the meantime have a rest and do something different like going to Stag do’s and Weddings.
