As the holders of the Kent sevens Championship sponsored by Shepherd Neame Wells travelled to Canterbury on Sunday with a much changed squad which included only 2 players from last years successful group. However, this squad was brimming with youthful talent from the Club Seniors and from the Judd School and Tonbridge School Sevens teams.
Wells drew Whitstable, Olaf’s axes, Maidstone and Sidcup in their group and despite having to wait nearly two and a half hours for their first game took their frustration out on:-
This took Wells unbeaten into the semi-finals.
Wells relied to this stage on a very well drilled side with Ollie Smith sweeping superbly, big tackling from Sitiveni Turagaiviu, clinical and deadly finishing from tournament top try scorer Mike Doherty and tenacity and penetration from Iain Bartley.
Ian McCaul, James Johnson and Steve Jones, provided fresh legs and organization with Johnson the Head of rugby at Tonbridge School providing just the right level of coaching on and off the pitch. Steve Jones managed and captained the team superbly throughout.
As it turned out, whether the luck of the draw or the slightly chaotic nature of the Competition given a number of late withdrawals Wells were given only 15 minutes rest before their semi-final versus a strong guest side in Kamikaze. Wells put up a great show matching the Guests for much of the semi-final but ultimately lost 29-21.
Kamikaze defeated Olaf’s Axes in the final ( Already defeated at the Group stage by Wells) and Tunbridge Wells and Dover were awarded the Cornwallis Trophy which Wells also won last season, for the top performance by a Kent side in the Competition.
This Sunday sees the Wells squad competing in the E Kent Sevens at the Crabble Ground Dover.
Squad: James Johnson, Steve Jones, Sitiveni Turagaiviu, Iain Bartley, Ian McCaul, Ollie Smith, Etienne O’Neill, Mike Doherty, Luke Wallace, Adam Field, George Yeomans.
